I found a tutorial for Panels, and in part 5 of the screen-cast the author has created a page to allow users to update content without needing the administration section.

Create a panels page. Then setup selection rules for what user roles can use it. http://awesomescreenshot.com/07chnkvd8 You'll probably want to create a variant for anonymous users and another one for admin users. Each page can then be completely different and independent from the other. |
