I'd just like to point out that I had a hard time using an #autocomplete_path of e.g. admin/my-module/search, and instead I used this and it immediately worked: my-module-search. For whatever reason(s), my page callback kept being delivered the word list as the input, until I changed the path, then the input was delivered correctly right away.
