Using the Print module, I managed to get dompdf working to some degree. However, there are differences between the 'printer friendly version' and the 'PDF version' generated, specifically with regard to rotated text. My concern is specifically about the rotated text, which rotation works for both printer version and PDF versions, but the PDF version has not positioned the text in the right place. See below the differences:

When looking at the Printer friendly version's HTML, I see this:

I thought it might have to do with the float: I edited the dompdf_config.inc.php file: def("DOMPDF_ENABLE_CSS_FLOAT", true); However, that did make no difference in the output.

Instead of using that module, I prefer to use PrintFriendly where you don't need to install additional scripts. And it's customizable too.

As a workaround, or alternative approach, I used the wkhtmltopdf library instead of dompdf. The best documented tutorial I found here: http://www.sitepoint.com/effective-pdf-generation-drupal/ That solved the issue. However, the current post applies to dompdf so is still unresolved.
