I am having trouble using various custom templates based on the newsletter category in drupal, from searching around I see this is a fairly popular topic, but I can't seem to wrap my head around a problem I'm having.

I installed simplenews, mime mail and mailsystem. I've set the sitewide default to "MimeMailSystem" and have "Theme to render the emails" set to my subtheme(based off zen), set Mime Mail email format to "full html" and for a testing news category I created called "testing" I've set email format to "html" as well. I went into the database and looked up the TID for the "testing" category and it is 384.

I see that I can customize the body of simplenews and mimemail templates by doing:

simplenews-newsletter-body--[tid].tpl.php

mimemail-message--[module]--[key].tpl.php

mimemail-message--[key].tpl.php

I have copied these files and put them in my subtheme template folder and named them:

simplenews-newsletter-body--384.tpl.php

mimemail-message--simplenews--384.tpl.php

mimemail-message--384.tpl.php

I have also tried replaceing 384 with the taxonomy term "testing" as well.

In the default mimemail template I have put in so I can see the key, when I send out test emails it returns "test" and when I send out via cron it returns "node" it doesn't return "384" or "testing" as a key/tid. So it completely ignores the templates that I have created. I feel like I'm missing something really basic, but I'm not sure what. Any help would be appreciated.
