It would appear that the link module doesn't allow new TLDs domains to validate such as .london or .bike

Is there an alternative module or would the solution be to patch the module? And also allow for future TLDs?

    Questions asking to recommend or find a book, tool, module, theme, distribution, tutorial, or other off-site resource are off-topic for Drupal Answers, and fixing existing module is already happening here and here - in issue queue where it belongs. – Mołot Sep 15 '15 at 20:55
  • +1 Thanks @Mołot I have just looked at your links and found that the one I mention is the same as your 2nd link. I have added value in the answer to this by picking out the specific comment that provides a solution. – therobyouknow Sep 17 '15 at 11:00

In settings.php :-

 $conf['link_extra_domains'] = array('paris', 'berlin', 'newyork');
