I'm working with a Drupal site that features a fair amount of content, in excess of 1000 pages. The content is grouped in to Books and from there a hierarchical parent & child structure is created, often 4 or 5 levels deep.

What I'm finding difficult is content editors managing the order of content within books. The default method of adding a weight value can be difficult to understand. The drag & drop method (via Structure > Books) is also difficult to use with so much content, it can be really tricky to reorder items in the hierarchy when you are dragging a parent item with many children etc.

It would be great if the drag & drop ordering allowed users to collapse/show items within the structure, I feel that would make things much more manageable.

Am I missing something obvious somewhere? Or is there a better way to achieve this?

  • Sounds like you would want to use a preprocess hook and restructure your top level items, and their children, to be contained within a collapsible element. The Details element seems to me like the right tool for the job. – Beau Oct 8 '20 at 13:32
