Have you ever tried by printing what is carried in $search variable? $search = $args[':db_condition_placeholder_1']; If it is from views go for hook_views_query_alter() it would be simple.

There are lots of search modules to deal with all kinds of use cases, and I'm sure you'll find one to solve yours.
